A How-To Guide for Throwing a Pawesome Party for Your Pooch!

It could be a birthday, adoption day celebration or obedience school graduation; in any case, your prized pooch’s big day is approaching. What better way to celebrate than by throwing a DIY doggy party? Just like a kid’s birthday, there’s bound to be excitement, treats, cake, games and much planning to be done. Fortunately, Pets Love Zone is here to take some of the guess work out of the big day for you and help you along your way to hosting one of the most sensational soirees known to man’s best friend.

First and foremost are three words: location! location! location! To ensure you make the most of your big day, choose your venue wisely. It needs to be a fully enclosed area (to avoid escapees!) but one with plenty of room for games and hooning. If your own private backyard is not suitable, think about a nearby dog-friendly park or venue. Once you’ve settled on your special spot, the preparations can begin. This means you can get stuck on the guest list and invitations.

Time For A Doggie Dental? Know The Drill!

We've all heard the statistics, around 70% of pets over the age of three already have some form of dental disease.  Dental problems can vary from a buildup of plaque and some redness of the gums all the way through to severe gum disease resulting in extensive inflammation and infection. This is very painful and if not caught until later stages will often require expensive procedures and treatments to fix. It’s amazing what our pets can be hiding in there so be sure to inspect your pet’s mouth regularly; you may be surprised at what you find!

So your pet has bad breath, red gums or some yellow plaque? Time for a dental. August is dental month and most vet clinics will have some kind of promotion or discount offer on dentals and/or dental products, so it's a great time to get on top of that bad doggy breath. Ask for a free dental check and a discount on any necessary procedures.

All things itchy! Skin stuff explained

Why is my dog itchy?
Ongoing skin issues are one of the trickiest things to deal with and treat effectively. Not only is the constant scratching annoying for us, it is even more annoying for the poor pooches enduring it.  If the itching is not caused by parasites or a food allergy its most likely what's referred to as "atopy", which may as well translate to "allergic to air".  Of course, this is not exactly the case; it's the things within the air that are causing our canine friends to scratch.

How do I know if my dog has atopy?
Atopy in dogs is comparable to human hay fever.  Whilst hayfever causes a runny nose and sneezing for us, it causes itchy skin for our dogs. There is no test to say "yes, your dog has atopy", it is diagnosed by a vet who has analysed your pets individual history and symptoms and is based on the findings of a physical examination.

Does your cat have Cattitude?

Cats, like humans, have personalities that vary from moggie to moggie. However, the two things that makes our feline friends incredible are their unique behaviour and traits that keep pet ownership interesting. These endearing traits further cement our friend’s paw prints eternally in our hearts. Are you yet to have come across a cat without it’s own unique brand of cattitude? Either way, read on…

Cattitude can manifest itself in different ways, as we shall explore. But one of the most common forms of cattitude manifests in the old classic- the ‘midnight dash.’ Suddenly in the dead of night, under the cover of darkness, witching hour strikes and your feline friend undertakes dramatic impromptu laps of the house. Crashing ensues and the circus does not stop until every member of the family is awoken. When you finally manage to get to sleep, you feel a paw on your cheek, and perhaps a slight claw if you don’t rouse easily. By now you would have learnt this is a signal to either move over and share the pillow or lift up the doona so your cat can crawl under to keep warm.

Bringing Pets into Australia

This article provides an overview of the process of bringing a dog or cat into Australia. It is not meant as legal advice. For full guidelines, visit the Australian Department of Agriculture website.

Bringing a pet into Australia can be difficult, but it is not impossible. There are often services that will handle the process from start to finish, but generally knowing what you have to do and why it must be done can help to minimise frustration. Australia has strict import laws, designed to keep the locals safe from foreign diseases. These laws regulate what vaccinations a pet must have and the amount of quarantine they must undergo before being allowed into Australia. The laws change depending on the country you are bringing your dog or cat in from. Airlines may have separate regulations you must also follow to keep your pet comfortable on the flight. Following the guidelines will keep you and your pet safe and welcome Down Under.

Keep Your Pets Warm Over Winter

Perhaps your beloved terrier dreams of running with the wolves through snowy woods. In reality, most modern pets are ill-prepared for winter. Animals can't plan ahead for cold weather, so you've got to do the planning for them.
